The Chicken Tractor and the Elk Creek Cafe are joining together to host the Harry Smith Festival, an afternoon/early evening event featuring multiple bands and acts performing songs from the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music.

Who was Harry Smith?, you may ask.

Among other things, Harry Smith was an archivist, ethnomusicologist, experimental film maker, artist, mystic, and inveterate collector of everything from Ukrainian Easter eggs to Seminole Indian blankets, to string figures, to....78 rpm records.

Working with Smithsonian Records in 1952 Harry Smith released the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music, a multi-volume work that is little known now, but brought back to the light of day blues, hillbilly and cajun recordings made between 1927 and 1933, and, some argue, singlehandedly jump-started the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, providing a direct inspiration and wellspring for people like Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, New Lost City Rounders, Joan Baez and many others.

As a consequence, the Anthology also created second careers for many of the original musicians like Mississippi John Hurt, Clarence Ashley, Dock Boggs and Sleepy John Estes.

As such, the Anthology has had a tremendous, though little-recognized, influence on American roots and rural music. This show will be a BENEFIT for the HOPE Fund of Penns Valley, a local organization that assists local families facing sudden and unexpected financial and health crises.

The lineup of musicians is first rate represents both local and "from away" acts, including:

The Black Eyed Suzies ( Ithaca, NY)
The Wringers (Lancaster, PA)
The Wayward Girls (Ithaca, NY)
The Jivebombers with Jerry Zolten (Altoona)
Rusty Gun Revival (Clearfield County)
Berrit Smylin Band (Penns Vallley)
Steve Curtis & Erika Simonian (Brooklyn, NY)
The Chicken Tractor (host band from Penns Valley)

Food, art, film, great music and a great cause. We hope to see you there!

The HOPE Fund is a Christian Based Non-Denominational, Non-Profit Organization, dedicated to Helping Other People Everyday.  Our purpose is to assist residents of the Penns Valley Area School District who are faced with a medical crisis or personal disaster.  Unfortunately, tragedies occur everyday.  The HOPE Fund wants to have contingency funds available so we can act swiftly when these situations arise.  Therefore, we need your help to make this happen.  Due to the caring and generous spirit of the people in this valley, it is our plan to involve churches, civic groups and individuals in this project.
